About Dorothy Taubman and the Taubman Approach

Dorothy Taubman (1917-2013) was a teacher in Brooklyn, NY, who devoted herself to the discovery of what is involved in a virtuoso piano technique that is free of pain, fatigue and injury. She followed her curiosity of a simple question of why some children could play better than adults who had studied for many years. She had the wisdom and insight to realize that it wasn’t about how much one practiced but the physical motions involved in how one practiced.

The Taubman Approach is a science of movement and alignment that gives pianists healthy, efficient movements at the keyboard. The approach solves technical limitations, provides the tools for musical expression and avoids/overcomes repetitive stress injuries. The approach is not about exercising muscles as traditional piano techniques are known to teach. Instead it is about alignment and coordination of the body which, as a result, gives one strength, control and freedom of motion at the piano.
